Report
Banbury Star Road Race 2011 was an overwhelmingly atmospheric event for the 70 riders starting out and many spectators and volunteers anticipating watching the riders endure it’s challenging 3 laps and take on The Knowle for the KOM prize. The tough course splintered the riders leaving a leading group of 17 riders with another 3 groups to play cat and mouse behind them.
The leading group of riders included Banbury Star rider Justin Belcher. He crossed the finish line in 12th place which found him only just outside the points that he is chasing for promotion to upgrade to a Cat 2. Steven Booth, also of the Star, punctured early on and had to abandon-rotten luck in his first race of the 2011 season.
The strong climbers took further advantage of The Knowle to gain some distance from fellow riders in the leading group. 1st place was out rightly taken by Mike Simpson from GS Henley with a clean break on the finishing climb away from 2nd place rider and King Of The Knowle Adam Brittain from High Wycombe Cycling Club.
As well as being the first rider over the line Mike was also First Vet. First Woman’s prize was awarded to Tamina Oliver from Squadra Donne by beating the other female in the race, Clare Leaver from Team Zappi’s. Showing form in the main group William Macke from AW Cycles finished outside the points in 11th place but took away the First Junior prize.
Bikefood.com provided supplementary prizes for the winners.
Winner Mike says it was a "tough day" but had a "good atmosphere". Both Mike and Adam are delighted they are now Cat 2 riders as a result of their outstanding performance, but are saddened they will be unable to ride this 3/4 race next year. Many riders commented on how well the race was organised, by race organiser Dave Anson. They felt safe due to a good number of marshals which undoubtedly contributed to the good atmosphere. For many other riders this was the first time they had ridden this strongly recommended course and they thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and experience it gave them and will hope to return again next year.
